To stay ahead, you have to master the technology

Medical history was made when the first patient with kidney stones was treated successfully with shock waves in February 1980. It was in 1989 when STORZ MEDICAL revolutionized shock wave lithotripsy with its special design of a new cylindrical coil to generate shock waves with most favourable field distribution and widest energy range. For the first time, this technique allowed extremely large apertures and extraordinary focal depth. Another striking feature of the cylindrical coil was the central opening that was designed to enable inline localization. This inline configuration was a technological masterpiece.

MODULITH® SLK »inline« - Design in every detail

On track to the future

Today, an appealing lithotripter design is achieved through the combination of remarkable ideas and brand tradition. STORZ MEDICAL's »design center« in Tägerwilen/Lake Constance works that way, in close cooperation with the innovation company »frog design«. Successful design must embody the right balance of future, tradition and persistence. After all, it must appeal to the subjective expectations and attitudes to work of not only regular customers but also of prospective customers. These design principles apply precisely to the MODULITH® SLK »inline« by STORZ MEDICAL.

Outstanding innovations such as inline localization, intuitive touch control, over- and under-table treatment and versatile usage in SWL and endourology are combined with proven and thus familiar design elements. Nevertheless, in the new MODULITH® SLK »inline« we still retain, for example, our cylindrical coil system, dual imaging or the modular set-up of the system. In the end, it doesn't matter how innovative a lithotripter design is. If such details are applied skilfully, a lithotripter must be clearly recognized as belonging to a certain brand: »It's a STORZ MEDICAL lithotripter«. That is a very important factor in the art of design.

A focus on the customer

A modern lithotripter design requires the creativity of engineers and designers, but also an understanding of the wishes, expectations and daily needs of the customers. Persistent work, continuous involvement of clinical partners and experience are essential ingredients – in addition to ingenious inspiration. The custom-made design of each and every detail of the MODULITH® SLK »inline«, from the shape of its body, to each simple switch was checked, gauged against our traditional design, and appropriately adapted, over an over again, first on computer, and then later with prototypes. Functionality, materials and feel were developed parallel to and in ongoing interaction with the form of this innovative system.

Without this approach, apart from the moment of novelty offered by the MODULITH® SLK »inline«, this lithotripter generation would not be successful in reflecting our STORZ MEDICAL brand tradition and our requirements.
